Alberta Hydrogen Day 2025: Showcasing Collaboration, Innovation, and Leadership Across the Province

October 2, 2025, marked Alberta’s first-ever Hydrogen Alberta Day — a full-day event dedicated to advancing the province’s leadership in hydrogen innovation, technology, and policy.

Hosted by Hydrogen Alberta and the Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB, in partnership with the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub, this event brought together government officials, industry leaders, academics, and innovators for a series of meaningful discussions that showcased Alberta’s hydrogen momentum.

Held at The Creative Hive in Edmonton, the event underscored the spirit of collaboration that continues to drive Alberta’s hydrogen future.

A special thank-you goes to Jennele Giong (Integrated. Strategic. Partners.), who served as event emcee, guiding the program seamlessly throughout the day.

Setting the Stage

The day began with Welcome Remarks from:

  • Rebecca Goldsack, Chair, Hydrogen Alberta & COO, Diesel Tech Industries
  • Brent Lakeman, Executive Director, Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB
  • Zak Cunningham, Lead, Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub

A video address from Minister Nathan Neudorf (Affordability and Utilities) reaffirmed the provincial commitment to the hydrogen roadmap and Alberta’s clean energy goals.

Morning Sessions: Policy, Standards, and Deployment

Hydrogen Roadmap

Moderated by Barbra Korol, this discussion brought together Charles Ward (Government of Alberta) and Dave Van Den Assem (Alberta Innovates) to explore coordination across jurisdictions, the upcoming 2026 provincial roadmap, and the vital role of Bill 52 in enabling hydrogen blending and unlocking new market opportunities.

Codes and Standards
Led by Paula McGarrigle (Solas Energy)Sidney Manning (Alberta Municipal Affairs), and Diego Moreno (Edmonton International Airport), this session highlighted the importance of consistent regulation and transparency in ensuring safe, scalable hydrogen infrastructure.

H₂ Use in Transportation
Featuring David Hales (City of Edmonton)Chris Brown (City of Calgary)Jamie Kraft (AMTA), and Mark Lea-Wilson (The Transition Accelerator), this panel showcased progress in fleet decarbonization projects including AZEHT, AZEFF, and AZETEC, demonstrating how real-world use cases are paving the way for hydrogen adoption in heavy-duty and municipal transport.

Hydrogen Supply Projects
Moderated by Chad Badry, the final morning panel featured Jared Sayers (Azolla Hydrogen)Christine Krol, and Michael Ashton (Linde) discussing Alberta’s leadership in hydrogen production and the challenges and opportunities of connecting supply to emerging market demand.

Afternoon: Strategy, Skills, and Innovation

The afternoon opened with Ministerial Keynotes from Honourable Brian Jean, Minister of Energy and Minerals, who emphasized Alberta’s strong position for global hydrogen leadership, the opportunities ahead for clean hydrogen exports, and the importance of persistence as the sector scales.

Why Hydrogen
Hosted by Kelsey Brooks (Canadian Hydrogen Association), this fireside chat featured Brodie Chalmers (ATCO) and Alex Grab (Verne) discussing why hydrogen matters today.

Upskilling the Energy Workforce
Brent Lakeman (Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB) moderated an engaging panel featuring Carla Madra (Women Building Futures)David Gordon (University of Alberta), and Agatha Ojimelukwe (NAIT). The session underscored Alberta’s leadership in building the next generation of skilled professionals through education, hands-on training, and collaboration between industry and academia.

Alberta’s Hydrogen Hubs
With Jennele Giong moderating, Zak Cunningham (Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub) and Brent Lakeman (Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB) discussed how regional hubs are aligning infrastructure development, production, and end-use markets to accelerate province-wide adoption and de-risk hydrogen investments.

Enabling Technology: Practical Pathways to Decarbonization

The final session of the day, Enabling Technology, highlighted the technologies making hydrogen deployment possible today.

Moderated by Amanda Sparks (Edmonton Global), the panel featured:

  • Rebecca Goldsack (Hydrogen Alberta / Diesel Tech Industries)
  • Evan Grant (Creative Truck Performance Ltd.)
  • Mohamed Khaja (Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB)

Rebecca Goldsack presented the case for hydrogen–diesel dual-fuel systems as an essential bridge technology to decarbonization — offering an immediate, practical path to reducing emissions without replacing existing diesel assets.

Evan Grant discussed the real-world benefits of DTI’s Guardian Hydrogen-Diesel System, emphasizing operational flexibility and cost efficiency, while Mohamed Khaja spoke to the importance of scaling proven, incremental innovations as part of a larger hydrogen ecosystem.
