In Edmonton, Alberta we have had a horrible week on our roads, and our hearts go out to the families involved.
This once again brings light to all the more reason ELD Electronic Driver Logs are coming into effect on June 2021, part of what is required as an inspection report and if a driver finds fault even minor they will be able to take photos.
Daily vehicle inspections are currently required under the law. However, due to the nature of paper logbooks, these inspections are often falsely recorded. With an ELD, the inspection will be time-stamped and include a GPS location of said inspection once completed. This will help to cut down on the falsifying of vehicle inspection documents. Although there is no perfect way to eliminate falsifications or errors, it is a step in the right direction to ensuring the safety of drivers and the general public. Although it may seem invasive, ELDs help to show where the accountability sits, and shows due diligence to mitigate liability.
While we don’t know the details of these incidents, we are hoping that in the near future this mandate will help to bring everyone home safely.
ELDs will be required for anyone travelling 160kms from the home base but we think once it is rolled out in the next couple of years that will be adjusted again.
While millions of km are driven every year safely, it only takes a split second for something to happen. More Details from the Incident here and here.
